Sunday Donuts

We heard the hype, so we came for the donuts. 

Federal Donuts just got rated as one of the 50 finest donut shops in America by Saveur magazine. If that's not reason enough to check it out, Renee was in town from Minny, so we ate some donuts this morning. The order: 6 donuts and a cup of coffee. Three "fancy" donuts: Turkish coffee, French toast, blueberry muffin,

and three "hot fresh" (made to order) donuts: vanilla spice, cinnamon-brown sugar, and strawberry-lavender.

The verdict: cinnamon-brown sugar blew the competition away. Simple, moist, with a crunchy  cinnamon sugar coating. Runners up: vanilla spice (Renee) and strawberry-lavender (Lucy). 

We had higher hopes for the fancy donuts, but they were either too fancy or not fancy enough. The Turkish coffee didn't live up to its name. The donut was a little dry, and the icing didn't taste like coffee or the wonderful spices in Turkish coffee, though Renee (who doesn't drink coffee) thought there was a nice spice to it. The blueberry muffin was interesting - it was coated in a tart blueberry jam - a departure from the Dunkin' Donuts version I grew up with. The French toast was overkill. Super sweet maple icing with weird crumbles on top.

The coffee was delicious.

Lessons learned: simple is always better, as stick with the hot fresh donuts.
